On October 20, 2012, The River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles honored the St. Charles Noon Kiwanis Club along with Vern and Sharon Olie with the “Golden Turtle Award”.
The St. Charles Noon Kiwanis Club was given the award for its many years of contribution toward the enhancement of the Fox riverfront and their strong support to improve the St. Charles Fox River Corridor. They sold Legacy Bricks for the River North Gateway Project, donated a bench along the Bob Leonard Walkway, initiated the Fox River Clean-Up on Rte. 31, and have maintained an unobstructed view of Pottawatomie Park, from that location, for over 10 years. The Kiwanis has also been the main volunteer base in the River Corridor Foundation’s Bob Leonard 5K Run/Walk & Colonial Café Kids’ Turtle Hurdle fundraiser.
“The 2012 recipients have given greatly of their time and talents to the redevelopment, preservation, enhancement, and appreciation of the Fox River Corridor of St. Charles. Their gifts will keep on giving as people continue to enjoy our riverfront” – Rev. Al Patten, Founder and Chairperson of the “Golden Turtle Award”
Betsy Penny, Noon Kiwanis Club President, gracefully accepted their award on behalf of the club. She dedicated it to Jack Kerr and Bob Leonard, both deceased, longtime members of Kiwanis, and RCF founding Board members. Vern and Sharon Oie humbly accepted their award and gave thanks to all those who are continuing what they helped start in support the redevelopment of our riverfront.
“This is the latest example of a lifetime of devotion to St. Charles. Through their charm, grace and humor, they have left an indelible imprint on our community“ – Larry Maholland, RCF Board Member
